Frenchme is a free learning service. We collect as little as we can and never sell or share data for advertising.
What we store
- Account: your name, email address, a salted password hash if you sign in with a password, your Google account identifier if you sign in with Google, the date you confirmed your email, and the date you confirmed you are 18 or over.
- Year of birth: when an account is set up we ask the holder for their year of birth, once. We use it only to check that they are 18 or over, then discard it. We never store the year, only the fact that the holder confirmed being an adult, and when. If the answer shows someone is under 18, we delete the account they just started and sign them out.
- Profiles: a display name, a picture choice, and for children only an age band (3 to 4 or 5 to 6). We never ask for a child's full name, birthday, photo or voice.
- Learning records: your study plan, placement result, lessons completed, answers needed to score them, review card schedule, study time per day, conversation transcripts, texts you submit for marking and mock exam answers.
- Security records: sign-in events with a keyed hash of the IP address (never the raw address), and the browser name for your list of signed-in devices.
Speech and tutor services
When an adult or teen uses speaking or writing practice, the text of the conversation or essay is sent to our language model provider (Anthropic) to produce replies and feedback, and recorded speech is sent to our speech provider (OpenAI) to be transcribed. Audio is not stored by Frenchme. Providers process this data under their API terms, which do not allow training on it. Children's profiles never use these services: there is no microphone, no chat and no free text in the children's space.
Cookies
We use only essential cookies: your session, a short-lived cookie during Google sign-in, your theme choice, your time zone (so your practice days follow your local day), and, after an answer under 18 on the year of birth question, a cookie that lasts 24 hours and holds only that outcome, so the same message shows if the question is tried again. No analytics or advertising cookies.
Children
An account belongs to one adult. Teen profiles (13 to 17) and young children's profiles (3 to 6) are added by that adult, as a parent or guardian, and managed from their account. Child profiles are created and controlled by a parent or guardian through their own account. Parents can view, export and delete everything at any time. We collect no personal information directly from children and use no behavioural tracking, profiling or third-party services in the children's space.
Your rights
In Settings you can export all your data as a file and delete your account, which immediately and permanently deletes every profile and record attached to it. Backups expire within 30 days.
Retention
We keep data while your account exists. Unconfirmed sign-ups and expired tokens are removed automatically; security records are kept for 12 months.
